How do I Know If I Need to Call an Attorney?

The aftermath of a car accident is never an easy to thing to get through on your own. If you have been injured, your focus is (and should be) on recovering from your injuries. Unfortunately, an injury isn’t the only thing you have to worry about.

You’ve probably have been given “advice” from your family, friends and acquaintances.  Maybe your neighbor told you that you should call an attorney but your dad tells you it is a waste of time. A lot of folks, especially those living in close knit communities or with a great support system will rely on those people closest to them to make a good decision. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the best idea. How can you decide for yourself whether to contact an attorney or not?

There isn’t a magic formula for knowing when or if you should call an attorney but there are some tell-tale signs that could at least clue you in to making a move to get more information.

  • Is the insurance company claiming the accident was your fault even though it wasn’t?
  • Is the insurance company trying to make you sign anything?
  • Have you suffered a serious injury that may be permanent?
  • Is your insurance company telling you that the treatment your doctor has recommended is unnecessary?
  • Did the insurance company dig through your medical records and blame your current injuries on an injury you already had?
  • Is the adjuster trying to force you into giving a recorded statement?
  • Is the insurance company trying to make you accept a settlement before you have had a chance to get better or before you even know what is wrong with you?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, it is a good sign that you need to take the next step. What’s the next step? Getting educated. Any move that you make from here on could be detrimental to your case if you don’t know what to look out for.
